HISTORY
SECRET IDENTITY NAME: JAMES SAVAGE
Dreadnought is an alien, who came to Earth from a distant planet, with instructions to fight injustice wherever he found it (original, huh?). He arrived on our planet with no notion of what humanity was all about. In his initial adjustment period, some if his early efforts at fighting evil were somewhat misguided. For example, Dreadnought spent 3 years in the late seventies as a studio wrestler, and developed quite a cult following.
Eventually, Dreadnought got his act together, and became a popular superhero. His image was that of a man always in control of the situation. His ultra-cool image was, in part, due to the groovy shades he always wore, to hide the blood red eyes that were an indicia of his race.
Dreadnought and Ice Avenger were roommates in the late seventies, although neither knew of the hero identity of the other. Both of them were struggling young men, and they shared a flat at the Keeler Boarding House in Mid-City, Pa. Both moved away simultaneously (to live at AlertForce HQ, incidentally), although neither knew why at the time.
Dreadnought was a founding member of AlertForce. In addition to being the most physically powerful member of AlertForce at the time, Dreadnought was also the team's "frontman" who absorbed most of the physical damage directed at the team. Dreadnought was also the emotional core of the team in those early days, even though he was not initially the team's leader. He was very close to Ice Avenger, and was selected by IA to be his successor when IA stepped down as team leader in ERA II.
During the early days of AlertForce (ERA I), Dreadnought was a very high-profile hero. The public of Mid City adored him. Hie heart was so big that he even took in a child who was orphaned by a supervillain attack. The child's name was Johnny, and he lived at AlertForce HQ for several years. Johnny eventually manifested mutant abilities himself, and later became the superhero called Brainwave (thanks in no small part to Dreadnought's early influence).
Dreadnought also gave freely of his time to charities, and could often be seen at local hospitals, visiting with sick children. He could also do no wrong as far as the press was concerned -- a fact which kept the team's image out of trouble in those early days, despite some blunders.
Dreadnought's chief nemesis was the Inventor, who relished hitting Dreadnought with shrinking and growth rays, that played havoc with Dreadnought's alien physiology, and self image. Dreadnought's height fluctuated between 4 feet and 10 feet during ERA I. Dreadnought also had some epic battles with Bricklayer, Pounder, and Jim Jett. Dreadnought always had a soft spot in his heart for Slither, though, whom he thought was misunderstood.
Dreadnought's favorite mode of attack was the charge attack (which we referred to at the time as a "move through"). He often flew straight into danger in an attempt to draw fire away from other teammates. He was also fond of the so-called "fastball special" made famous by Collossus and Wolverine of the X-men, in which Dreadnought would physically hurl either Knight Watchman or Ice Avenger at a foe.
Sometime near the end of AlertForce ERA III, Dreadnought was summoned back to his home planet, which needed him to aid them in an interplanetary war. Although Dreadnought joined their battle, fought valiantly, and was decorated as a hero, his planet lost the war, and is now occupied by the invading force (called the Caitian Alliance). In the final climactic battle, Dreadnought was almost killed, but managed to limp away in a damaged ship, which carried him back to Earth.
Without direction from home, Dreadnought drifted after his return to Earth. He did not rejoin AlertForce, and even for a time fell under the mind control of the team's old mentor-turned-villain Dr. Feldon. After attacking AlertForce several times and engaging in epic battles with his old teammates, Dreadnought was "snapped out of it" through the joint efforts of Jack of All Trades, Thermo, and Iron Knight. He has since worked with his old team on several occasions, although he has not actively rejoined them. Dreadnought is currently listed as a reserve member of AlertForce, whose whereabouts and status are unknown.
ADDENDUM 2006: Dreadnought was last spotted in Alaska, at the funeral of Nathan Thurm, one of his oldest friends. He did battle with the alien entity that burst from Thurm's coffin during the funeral, which was the first time in years Dreadnought had done battle alongside any AlertForce members.
